Recording takes two people who already know each other. Send this page to someone you'd talk with.

What you need

Both participants need all of the following.

  • A computer with Fiber installed
  • Webcam, 720p or better1080p if your webcam supports it. 720p is accepted only when it does not. 30 frames per second or more.
  • MicrophoneUse the best one you already have.
  • Earbuds, not over-ear headphonesTo reduce echo. Nothing may cover your face.
  • Separate roomsEach person alone in their own room, with no one else on camera or on audio.
  • Quiet, well-lit indoor roomEven light on your face. No public places. Background blur off.
  • Whole face visibleNo hats, caps or glasses during recording. Keep hair away from your eyes.

You also need stable internet and a steady camera facing you directly. In Fiber, use a nickname instead of your real name. While recording, do not eat or drink, and keep personal details out of the conversation and out of the camera's view.

Recordings with background noise, echo, a covered face, or a room or camera that fails these requirements do not count as eligible recorded hours.

How it works

Each person registers and gives consent separately, in this order.

Installing Fiber does not reserve a session. Sessions depend on the daily window, your partner, and the setup checks.

    Go to app.oto.earth and sign in or create your own account.

    Install Fiber

    Click "Download an app", install Fiber and sign in with your oto account. If Fiber opens your browser to authorize, finish there and return to Fiber.

    Consent and checks

    Choose a nickname. Read the terms and the recording consent, allow camera and microphone access, and complete the environment, framing and audio checks.

  4. Your partner

    The person you talk with does steps 1 to 3 on their own account and their own computer, in a different room.

  5. Daily window

    Recording and payout

    Join the daily window with your partner. Each conversation is currently 10 minutes, following a prompt shown in the app. For payment, open Account > Payout > Configure on the oto website and follow the Stripe instructions.

Session times

Each conversation is currently 10 minutes. Each person is limited to 10 hours in total for this project, and we may set a lower limit.

Pacific: 5:00 to 6:00 PM through October 31, then 4:00 to 5:00 PM

Eastern: 8:00 to 9:00 PM through October 31, then 7:00 to 8:00 PM

This is 9:00 to 10:00 AM in Japan, where sessions are scheduled.

Who can take part

oto confirms eligibility when you create your account.

  • 18 or older (or the age of majority in your state, if higher).
  • Live in the United States, and record from an eligible US state.
  • Not a resident of, and not recording from, Washington, Illinois, Texas, Colorado or Connecticut.
  • Speak native or fluent US English.
  • Separate rooms. Each of you records alone in your own room.
  • Someone you already know who meets the same requirements: a friend, family member, spouse or romantic partner, roommate, classmate or coworker. We ask how you know each other before recording.

This is paid participation in a data collection project.

Pay

Eligible recordings pay $20 to $30 per recorded hour, per participant.

Rates vary based on audio quality and the project's language and accent requirements. We confirm your rate before you record.

We pay through Stripe. You set this up under Account > Payout > Configure on the oto website.

Available recording time is not guaranteed. Each person is limited to 10 hours in total for this project, and we may set a lower limit.

Recordings from ineligible locations, or with audio quality below the project's minimum requirements, do not count as eligible recorded hours.

You will not receive royalties or any share of the AI systems or datasets built from your recordings.

Your recordings

Your face, facial expressions, voice and everything you say are recorded on video and audio. Video is required; audio only is not possible.

We use the recordings and transcripts to create datasets for AI research and development, including commercial use.

Datasets may be licensed to other companies and researchers, and in some cases released in limited or public form. Recipients may pass them on further.

We may remove identifying details, but your voice and face can still identify you. Anonymity is not guaranteed.

After you submit a recording, you cannot review or approve it. The consent waives those rights. Deleting it may not be possible either, because the recording may already be part of datasets or models. You give oto ownership and a permanent license to the recordings.

Taking part is voluntary and you can stop at any time. What happens to a recording before and after you submit it is set out in the consent.

You review the Terms of Service and the Recording Consent & AI Data Release Agreement in Fiber before your first recording. The Privacy Policy is at app.oto.earth/privacy-policy. The consent also includes a release of claims; read it in full. This page is not the consent.

Partners, phones, accounts and what happens next.

Does the person I talk with need their own account?

Yes. Each of you registers, reads the consent and agrees on your own, in separate rooms. One account or one consent does not cover two people.

What if I do not have anyone to join me?

You take part with someone you already know. If you do not have anyone yet, email agent@oto.earth and say so.

Can I take part on my phone?

Recording currently happens in Fiber on a computer.

Do I need to prepare anything to talk about?

No. Fiber shows a conversation prompt. Talk as yourself, in your own words. No scripts, no acting and no AI tools during the conversation.

What are the environment, framing and audio checks?

Setup steps in Fiber that check your room, your camera framing and your audio before you record. oto also reviews sessions afterwards and decides in that review which hours count as eligible.

What happens when I open app.oto.earth?

You go to the oto website. Registration, Fiber download, recording consent, setup checks and payout setup all happen there or in Fiber. Opening the website does not confirm your participation or reserve a session.

Who decides whether I qualify?

oto confirms your state of residence, setup and consent when you create your account and before recording.
